Peer Befriender
Befrienders support a person following their stroke by offering company, empathy and encouragement. This can be either face-to-face or over the telephone. This role focuses on social isolation and loneliness and can be delivered by a stroke survivor or a general befriender.
Group Lead
Help us run our peer support groups, helping people to socialise and connect. Whether you have had a stroke or not, these roles help us reach more people across Gloucestershire in more areas.
Expert By Experience
This is one of our more specialised volunteer roles and offers a unique opportunity to work with a Psychologist to co-deliver therapeutic interventions to a group of people struggling to adjust post stroke.
You are a ReConnect Volunteer but also recruited onto the NHS’s Expert By Experience database and called upon whenever required. Previous facilitators describe this as life-changing and one of the most powerful things they have done.
Stroke Mentor
Stroke Mentors offer a particular kind of Befriending support to stroke survivors by placing emphasis and ongoing focus on goal setting in order to help their recovery following a stroke. This short-burst support is weekly over 6 weeks, and the mentor will have had a stroke themselves.
Group Enabler
Assist our Group Leads at support groups. You are the person who will ensure these groups run smoothly, that people are welcomed and that tea and coffee flow.
Group enablers in the past have initiated raffles, designed quizzes and suggested trips and speakers.
Admin
We have lots of admin tasks to do, weekly, monthly, or ad hoc. All help is gratefully received.
Hospital Befriender
A befriending role on the stroke wards at Cheltenham General Hospital in the Woodmancote or Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU).
Also at The Vale Hospital on the Peak Ward.
Driver
Transport a participant to a peer support group and help them regain their independence. A stroke often stops a person from being allowed to drive for a few months or altogether.
Promotion
Our mission is to spread the word about stroke and aphasia in Gloucestershire. Our staff team get invited to many community events to speak about stroke and aphasia; far more than we can realistically attend. Join us in spreading the word about ReConnect Glos.
